Ho Chi Minh City (also referred to as “HCM” especially via text) is a bustling and diverse urban atmosphere. Getting around in this organised chaos is surprisingly not that difficult! If a person were to know the options.
You’ve got a range of choices to choose from:
1. Xe Om - the Gojek of Vietnam. The ideal option for solo travelers, backpackers and generally those seeking a flexible, cheap and adventurous transport option in exploring HCM. It is also the cheapest e-hailing option and rides can go as low as USD 0.60 per trip.
2. The Cyclo - traditional rickshaw pulling service for that old-school traditional feel! The Cyclo riders are also usually very knowledgeable about the city and you can negotiate a tour for up to four hours for as low as USD7! Will make your trip to the Notre Dame Castle and Ben Thanh Market that bit more memorable!
3. Motorbike/Scooter rental - the most popular transport option in HCM are on two wheels, after all. Rent your very own personal motorbike for the day from as low as USD5 and explore the beautiful city as a commuter. It may be a convenient option for those who want to be in control of their tour itinerary but be sure to at least familiarise yourself with the city traffic (Traffic drives on the right in Vietnam, but during heavy traffic vehicles can come from any direction!)
4. Bicycle rental - the cheapest, greenest option of all! Renting your own bike can cost as low as USD1 and you will have total freedom to go about the city without contributing to global warming! There are quite a number of tourist and local cyclists moving around HCM during the day and night, so it’s a relatively safe option. Just be sure to wear bright clothing especially at night so that other vehicles can spot you!
5. Grab - for those tech-savvy young parents, your Grab app works just fine in HCM and this would be the perfect option for you and the kids! The charges are somewhat similar to regular taxis, but cashless payment is an option and no overcharging on the trip! However, you won‘t be able to get around as quickly as you may have a tendency to get stuck in traffic.
6. Taxi - the good ol’ conventional taxi service. At USD0.25 per km, it is about the same (or slightly higher) charge to Grab. Just be sure to be able to convey your destination to the driver well!
