5 Facts About Masjid Sultan

1. In 1824, Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor signed an agreement with the British East India Company, which effectively ceded Singapore to the latter for the establishment of a British trading port on the island. The British also agreed to recognise Kampong Glam as the royal family’s asset with a parcel of land set aside for a royal mosque near Istana Kampong Glam (Palace). ⁣ 2. By the early 1900s, Singapore had become a centre for Islamic commerce, culture and art. The mosque soon became too small for this burgeoning community. A new mosque was completed after four years in 1932 by architect Denis Santry of Swan & Maclaren. It’s design was heavily influenced by the Indo-Saracenic style. This style combines traditional Indian and Islamic elements with European architectural features. ⁣ 3. Gazetted as a national monument on 8th March 1975, the Sultan Mosque has stayed essentially unchanged since it was built, with only repairs carried out to the main hall in 1968 and an annex added in 1993.⁣ 4. While you’re there, look closer at the onion domes. Each dome base is decorated with glass bottle ends, donated by poor Muslims during its construction so that all Muslims, not just the rich, could contribute.⁣ 5. The Mosque, located on Muscat Street is a 10 minute walk from Bugis MRT Station or by bus on North Bridge Rd, Beach Rd and Victoria St. ⁣ Follow us 👉 @aseanbuzz ⁣
